The Significance of Qurbani in Islam
The significance of Qurbani in Islam extends beyond the physical act of sacrificing an animal. It mirrors the extraordinary story of the Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to give up his most cherished son, Ismail (AS), in submission to Allah’s (SWT) command. When the moment of sacrifice arrived, Allah (SWT), recognising the magnitude of Ibrahim’s (AS) faith, replaced Ismail (AS) with a ram. Thus, Qurbani symbolises our willingness to give up what is most precious to us in the path of righteousness and faith.
An annual event, Qurbani takes place during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah, from dawn on the 10th day to sunset on the 12th. The days of Dhul Hijjah are amongst the most sacred in the Islamic calendar, and the first 10 days are considered the best in the year. These holy days also mark the conclusion of the spiritual journey of Hajj. Every year, millions of Muslims fulfil this important pillar of faith and perform the sacred pilgrimage.
The Guiding Principles Of Qurbani
- During the Qurbani period, from the 1st of Dhu'l-Ḥijjah until the time of sacrifice, the person participating in Qurbani must refrain from cutting their hair or nails. This applies to the person performing the slaughtering as well as to you, the donor.
- The Qurbani offering must be distributed in three parts, symbolising the spirit of sharing and community – one part for oneself and one’s own family, one for relatives, friends and neighbours and the remaining for the less fortunate.
- A Takbeer, a declaration of faith, must be pronounced before the sacrifice to ensure its acceptance.
- The animal to be sacrificed must be healthy and free from any physical defect.
- The animal chosen for Qurbani must be treated with respect and kindness, ensuring it doesn't suffer during the process.
- Sheep and goats selected for Qurbani should be at least one year old, whereas cows and buffalos must be at least two years old.
- Selling any part of the animal, including the meat, skin, or organs, is strictly forbidden. Such an act would invalidate the sacrifice and be considered a sin.
